Echoes Across Oceans
Ashleigh Jane
Ashleigh Jane, Echoes Across Oceans (detail, left: The Song of the Sea; right: They Saw a Monster in the Water), 2024-26, Digital media, Variable dimensions. Images courtesy of the artist.
This body of digitally illustrated prints explores a range of interconnected mythological stories from different parts of the world. Resonances across these stories invite reflection on how ideas travel, transform, and re-emerge across time and place.
Despite these communities not having historical overlaps, the similarities in their tales invite us to question whether these shared myths are mere coincidence, or echoes of a deeper truth.
Ashleigh Jane has lived in areas along the coast of Queensland her whole life, settling in Gurambilbarra / Townsville in 2008. She holds a Bachelor of New Media Arts (James Cook University, 2014), and has worked as a freelance artist and workshop facilitator for many years. Inspired by folktales and mythology, she turns to art as a space for both escape and storytelling. Working across a range of mediums including digital media, acrylic, gouache and ink, her practice explores themes of magic and fantasy. Ashleigh Jane also aims to create work which invites a sense of wonder and quiet reflection. The artist has had work in a number of group exhibitions in North Queensland, and held her first solo exhibition, Bestiary, at TYTO Regional Art Gallery in 2025. Her work continues to explore the space between myth and reality, drawing on stories to create images that feel both familiar and otherworldly.
