Volunteer

Umbrella is currently calling for enthusiastic, reliable volunteers. From time to time Umbrella also accepts interns, trainees and work experience students, and we occasionally have employment opportunities.

Opportunities exist for individuals to participate as volunteers in all areas of Umbrella’s operations, thus receiving valuable industry experience and professional guidance in all aspects of contemporary visual arts. We are also looking for people to fill in as on-call / backup volunteers – when our regular volunteers are sick or unable to attend shifts.

Volunteering is a great way to engage regularly with our art and creative projects, boost your network, make new like-minded friends and learn new skills. We offer a supportive environment, inductions and ongoing training. Umbrella is committed to involving its members, artists, students and other interested people from the community in both our daily and long-term activities. Other benefits for volunteering with Umbrella include:
- Work with nationally recognised artists and see behind the scenes of a professional art gallery
- Join networks of artists, members and volunteers
Enhance your resume with experience working in tourism & events, marketing and visual arts

2023 VOLUNTEER SAFETY UPDATE:
Vaccination is not required for ordinary visitation, and there are no restrictions on entry or occupant density requirements, so volunteers will not have to check visitors' vaccination status or refuse entry to people who are unvaccinated against Covid-19. There are however exceptions to these requirements and Umbrella workers will still have to make sure visitors are abiding by Umbrella's general conditions of entry. Umbrella workers must however be fully vaccinated (or have a medical contraindication or be a COVID-19 vaccine trial participant) and show their proof of vaccination to their supervisor. Workers are defined for the purposes of the plan as Umbrella staff, artists (when facilitating workshops) and volunteers. Read more about Umbrella’s COVID-Safe directives listed on our dedicated web page here.
