Jan Malkin and Lawrence Scheele
Magnetic Island has an unusually large number of talented people working in a variety of artistic fields. Island Living in Nelly Bay displays beautiful handmade pottery by local Magnetic Island resident Peter Dechantsreiter and also has a manufacturing jeweller onsite. Peter Stein has been manufacturing one off jewellery pieces for 20 years on Magnetic Island and has an eclectic collection of truly unique creations.
Recently, Island Living has refurbished a large selection of the shop to create a dedicated Art Gallery specifically for the local artists to showcase their amazing work. Artists work in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolours, acrylics and photo art. The gallery currently exhibits work from 10 Magnetic Island artists, with new artists joining daily.
Visit Jan Malkins’ home gallery and studio to see new bodies of work by both Jan Malkin and Lawrence Scheele. In What a Load of Rubbish Jan has repurposed domestic rubbish, transforming it into thought provoking works of art. In Above and Beyond, Jan and Lawrence Scheel, an underwater photographer and a painter, combining their talents in to present their island home from perspective both above and below the water, including a video showcasing the local marine life. The public are also invited to add their personal touch to a communal painting whilst at the gallery.

About The ArtistJan Malkin
Jan Malkin is an experimental artist based on Yunbenun / Magnetic Island. She is always searching for new ways to express herself and to capture the depth of feelings in colour, shapes and texture. Malkin has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in North Queensland and the UK and joined many art groups on her travels. In the Pilbara she was nominated for an Australia Day award for her contribution to art in the community.
Lawrence Scheele
Lawrence Scheele is an underwater photographer and is producing a book about the life in the waters around the island. He recently completed his degree in Marine Biology and is in the process of publishing a field guide into the marine life of Yunbenen / Magnetic Island.
