Compact Prints 2022

Compact Prints is a celebration of contemporary print practices, embracing traditional and technological methods. The project provides artists with a forum to exchange artwork and ideas. It also provides an opportunity to exhibit in a contemporary art space while supporting Umbrella through its fundraising auction. Artists each submit an edition of 3 identical prints – 1 for the exhibition (and potential tour), 1 for the auction and 1 for an artwork exchange.

The 2022 auction bidding closed at 1pm Sunday 2 October 2022 however an archive of the prints (last updated 11 October 2022) can be viewed below. Read more about previous and future iterations of Compact Prints here

2020 was a Glitch
2021-22
Photographic manipulation, laser print
12 x 12cm
Edition 1/5
As Melbourne cycled through five lockdowns, I collated digital ephemera in isolation: skylines / screengrabs / sound bites. I documented myself too: Zoom meetings / contrived selfies / maudlin portraits in the mirror like this one. I circled back to this image recently and started chopping and slicing, each cut an edit in a seemingly endless loop.

beacon
2022
Lithograph print on Snowden cartridge with liquid watercolour wash

Geometric crystal forms are a consistent personal iconography in Danish Quapoor's work. For this, the artist's first lithograph, the process and experimentation were also inherent to the concept.

Red Back
2022
Lino print with watercolour
12 x 12cm

I was inspired was Spider-Man but have seen Red Back spiders and I think they're awesome. My mum doesn't like Spiders but she's an artist so she likes this one.

Kafka's Dwelling
2022
Digital/Photoshop, HPProDesign FSC 300gsm paper
9.6 x 9.6cm (12 x 12cm paper)
Edition 1/10
Different shapes, textures and minimal use of colour are the main elements. The layered red organic shapes together with the white horizontal ones create space and seem to invite the viewer to come in, yet the black house-like structure appears foreboding, obscure and concealed.

Still life?
2022
Lino print with black ink on paper
12 x 12cm
Edition 1/4
I've been working with washed-up plastic, beach bottles in different formats. I like that they can look like both buildings and people. Originally the mass-produced forms of the best designers, returned now as sea-worn individuals - ghosts of consumerism - anxious and vulnerable to the first wave.

Auction bid: $30

The thought that has gone into the provision of playground equipment for today's children is a delight.
The opportunity to reflect this in my printmaking is too good to miss. The challenge to do this in a small format was irresistible.

Lost at sea
2022
Polycarbonate plate etching on BFK Rives paper
10 x 10cm (12 x 12cm paper)
Edition 1/3
This print has been created from a polycarbonate plate that has been chemically attacked. The etching process allows some control of the resultant image which, in this case, is based on the turbulence around a lighthouse during a storm. The resultant print, however, is essentially abstract.

Auction bid: $30
