Beyond the Studio: 40 Years of Umbrella

Thanks to community generosity during Aus Art Day last year, Umbrella surpassed its original $20,000 goal, raising more than $25,000 to begin digitising one of regional Australia’s most significant contemporary art archives.

The project preserves four decades of artist-led practice, exhibitions, advocacy and experimentation that helped shape regional Queensland’s place in contemporary Australian art history.

Voices from the Umbrella Community

"Umbrella has been a home for artists in North Queensland since 1986. Our archive holds one of regional Australia’s most significant contemporary art archives, spanning four decades of bold and experimental practice. This collection features artists such as Judy Watson, Gail Mabo, Kim Mahood, Anneke Silver, and Marion Gaemers, whose works have contributed to national and international conversations. With community support, we can ensure these vital perspectives are preserved for the future,” said Umbrella Director Kate O’Hara.

We built Umbrella from the ground up because artists needed a place to experiment, share ideas and be seen. These archives hold the history of that struggle and the stories of how regional artists connected into bigger national conversations. Umbrella’s legacy is part of the country’s cultural fabric, and it is vital that it is remembered and made accessible for the next generations,” said Anneke Silver, nationally celebrated artist and one of Umbrella’s founding members.

Beyond the Studio: 40 Years of Umbrella is proudly supported by Bamford Community Care and Mitsubishi Electric (through their North Queensland business partner Capricorn Air Conditioning), alongside the Creative Australia Plus 1 Program.
