PUNQ Tour: Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island Tours

'Discover our island's stories'

Discover Magnetic Island's stories with this exclusive PUNQ Tour that will take you around to the island's PUNQ pop ups and public artworks. Crafted specifically for the Yunbenun PUNQ program, the audience will visit the grounds of the Magnetic Island History Museum and Craft Centre at Picnic Bay to see Jenny Mulcahy's public artwork, The Mark, influenced by the island's history as a place of quarantine. The tour will also stop to see Jan Hynes' installation, Drop Bears, along the Forts Walk at Horseshoe Bay where koalas are commonly spotted up in the gum trees, but what else is lurking up in the trees?

Other stops will include the Jungle Club at Nelly Bay where visitors will be able to grab a coffee and explore the garden installation, Glow Land, and group exhibition, Beyond the Jungle, which flourishes with fantastical organic forms and artworks created from recycled materials. Visitors at the Jungle Club can also reflect on the iconic trees of Magnetic Island in Susan Swaddling's exhibition, Trees and the spaces in-between.  And revel in the landscapes of Magnetic Island through the paintings of Sylvia Hayes in her exhibition, Scapes.

Visitors will also stop at the home studio of Julie Woodlock where you can discover her garden exhibition, The Threats Are Here, a retrospective of Woodlock's artworks from the past decade, primarily centred on threats to the environment and campaigns that the artist has been involved in. And Rhonda Stevens invites visitors to celebrate life and experience the moment at her studio Atelier Trois, whilst reflecting on her contemporary print and sculptural works which engage with this concept and natural materials in her back deck exhibition, Conversations.

And last but not least, Jan Malkin will present her exhibition, A Sense of Place, at the Old School House in Horseshoe Bay. Malkin's exhibition reflects on her journey from the north of England to North Queensland and reveals a glimpse into her exploration of diverse subjects, styles and mediums through an emotional lens.

The tour will also stop at the Horseshoe Bay beach front for lunch where visitors can choose from a range of cafe's and restaurants.

The bus pick up time will be 9:15am from the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal, in-time for the arrival of the 8:45am ferry from Townsville and will drop everyone back at the ferry terminal around 2:15pm.
