Slip Painting Workshop

$80-100 | Catherine Ogden
Slip Painting Workshop

Above: Catherine Ogden, Frank, 2022, Glazed ceramic slip painting example.

Join Umbrella and exhibiting artist Catherine Ogden to develop a portrait, landscape or other painting that is unique in approach and materiality. The artist will lead participants through the process of painting with coloured slip (a liquified, slurry version of clay) onto a handmade clay slab tile. Catherine will also speak about the processes of surface decoration she has used for her works in Presence, and give tips for participants to personalise their painting.

Artists and beginners alike will find joy in this short, creative and experimental workshop. Participants should wear closed-in shoes, old clothes (or use an apron provided) and bring photographs for reference or ideas for their painting. The workshop fee covers all other materials (a leather-hard clay slab tile, a variety of slip colours and tools) and includes firing and the hanging wire. Catherine will allow the paintings to dry, bisque-fire them in her home studio, apply a clear glaze and re-fire them, then add a hanging wire for display. Participants can collect their paintings from Umbrella from Tuesday 26 July 2022 onwards.

Catherine and Warren's exhibition Presence is on display 10 June - 10 July 2022.
