Learn ancient silversmithing techniques of wax carving and sand casting with Nadine Suzanne. In this workshop participants will design and carve a ring from jewellers wax, create a mould with delft clay and cast a solid sterling silver ring. Nadine will give instruction on suitable designs and carving techniques and provide individual assistance with casting. She will demonstrate how to prepare the mould correctly and facilitate use of the equipment. Once each ring is cast, attendees will file, sand and polish their rings to the desired finish. Each participant will take home a personalized, ready-to-wear sterling silver ring!
This workshop is suitable for beginners, and attendees will be guided through every step of the process. Class sizes are small to enable one-on-one teaching. Our previous Silversmithing & Ring-making Workshops have sold out very quickly – so, book early to ensure your spot!
Please note that participants will be working with micro motors for extended periods of time, and that jewellery-making requires looking at small objects closely. There will also be supervised use of a gas blowtorch. A Workshop Access Requirements Form will need to be completed prior to the workshop day. Attendees must wear closed in shoes, tie their hair back and bring vision correcting glasses if they are normally worn. Umbrella will provide each participant with safety glasses and a P2 rated mask to protect against smoke inhalation when opening the mould.

Nadine Suzanne creates one-of-a-kind sterling silver pieces using sand and cuttlebone casting, and lost wax techniques. She creates impressions of Queensland’s coastal environments by working with found objects, such as sea glass, shells, and beach sand. Nadine often uses sand collected from sentimental locations to cast rings with unique organic textures for her clients. A collection of Nadine’s silver rings and pendants are now available to buy from Umbrella’s Gallery Shop.
