Join Umbrella's Administration and Marketing Officer Amanda Galea to learn processes and tips to take great photographs of your artworks. Amanda will speak about the importance of high-quality photographs and how they can improve exhibition applications, art award entries and the online presence of artists. She will provide suggestions for easy and accessible ways to take good photos at home or in the studio. Participants are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras and / or smartphones with cameras. Feel free to also bring an artwork you might be having trouble photographing at home. All other materials will be provided. 

Umbrella recommends attending this workshop if you are considering applying for an exhibition at Umbrella (application deadline midnight Sunday 6 October 2024) or elsewhere, or promoting your artwork online.

If booking in preparation for photographing work for an exhibition application at Umbrella, it is recommended to take advantage of the Umbrella member price at this point (as membership is a requirement for applications). | Bookings close 4:45pm Wednesday 25 September 2024. | Each session is limited to 10 artists and will take place at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts, 408 Flinders St, Townsville. Please note these sessions are scheduled according to fully booked classes. If less participants attend, the sessions may run slightly shorter than their scheduled finish time.

This session and the Writing artist texts and applying for exhibitions (5:30 - 6:30pm Tuesday 24 September 2024) session both intend to build on artists' skills and knowledge to present and elevate themselves, their practice and their art professionally. Umbrella staff and guests regularly run Creative Industries professional development sessions for artists, with other topics including grant-writing, social media and basic website development.

Amanda Galea works across a range of areas to support Umbrella's operations, including coordinating Umbrella's team of volunteers and photographing artworks to promote Umbrella's exhibitions. She previously held positions as Umbrella's Arts Administrator (2022), Festival Administrator for Pop Up North Queensland (PUNQ) (2021) and Business Trainee (2020). Amanda holds a Diploma of Visual Art from TAFE NSW Albury and a Diploma of Business from Southern Cross University. Prior to working at Umbrella, Amanda volunteered at a range of not-for-profit organisations assisting in administration duties and worked in various customer service positions.
