Aotearoa

Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand; the literal translation is long white cloud; a significant feature in our history of the great migration around 1,000 years ago. I have hand-painted gold onto the warrior figures as motifs of this well-known whakatauaki (Māori proverb):

‘He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.’
‘What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.’
