Torika Bolatagici

Expendable Flesh

I am a kailoma Fijian artist/educator based in Melbourne, Australia. My photomedia work is concerned with neo-colonial encounters between the US, Australia, Britain and Pacific Island nations, and in particular, with the systematic recruitment of Fijians to work for Private Security Military Companies, and other mercenary roles in the Middle East. My current PhD research investigates photographic representations of masculinity and military in Fiji. I am interested in the commodification of the black body in war and the ongoing colonisation of the black male body which seeks to inscribe the Fijian male body as warrior, criminal, protector.
