Sheree Kinlyside

Oriental Dancer

The truly original form of oriental dance, on which the western version of ‘belly dance’ is loosely based, is the last vestige of goddess worship in the Middle East, and it is in danger of becoming extinct. It began as a ritual for childbirth preparations and during this time many societies were matriarchal. The dance was performed by women for women before Islam and Christianity existed and at a time when the mother Goddess was worshipped and childbearing was sacred.
