Rick Shearman

Cortina

This print is based on a study for a 2001 exhibition of drawings and paintings (in Sydney’s artist run gallery, SPACE 3) entitled Crap cars of Surry Hills.

After living in Germany for a number of years where cars were all brand new and either black or silver, it was refreshing to come back to Australia and observe cars that had a long, colourful history – dented, mismatching coloured panels revealing the individual character of each car.

While the exhibition title sounds detrimental, in reality the series was an affectionate homage to cars with character.
