Markers – facing north

Our landscape is often difficult to read in that for thousands of square kilometres there may be few indicators of position but for those who know land, the most subtle and insignificant elements become site markers. They endow our landscape with what Les Murray calls the bearers of immanent divinity – gravesites, stones, trees, tracks, creeks, cairns, mountains, fences, floodgates – the markers of site for both the living and the dead.
