Bagged Still Life2002

Bagged Still Life follows on from a recent series of prints offering a contemporary response to, and reflection upon, the long European tradition of Still Life and tabletop painting. That genre of paintings which dwells on the objects of the household and everyday life. Reference could be made Juan Sanchez Cotan, J.B.S. Chardin, Pierre Bonnard and Georges Braque.

Still Life also provided an arena for 20th Century artists to explore the nature of pictorial structure. For example, domestic objects served as models for the explorations of cubism.

Digital technology has allowed me to work in a playful manner within, and with reference to, both printmaking and painting traditions. The prints in this series could not have been made in any other way. Although they perhaps make puns on the painterly surface, they exist entirely as digital images.
