Beyond ‘1984’ and ‘alternative facts’

An Orwellian future is already taking shape in China. Authorities are using a surveillance system which combines facial recognition, biometric data, AI, a big data database and compulsory vehicle tracking to rate the trustworthiness of citizens. The ‘social credit score’ is based on their social, political, and economic behaviour with low scorers being restricted and punished. A system like this is obviously well suited to controlling people and we need to be thinking about the implications.
