New Found Religion
Has sport become the new religion in Australia? Is there a shift from athletic achievement to televised entertainment? Why is it that main-streaming sporting “stars” make an easy transition from sports to television presenters? The artwork is a borrowed image of Christ and St Menas from a 6th century panel. The image has been reworked digitally as an icon of workshop for our new found religion of sports. The “news” media relentlessly updates us on every banal achievement or personal entanglement of our Australian sporting deities. Their performance, health and conquests are announced on our domestic shrines nightly. Mass is regularly performed on the edge of an upholstered bench with an alexia knows as four X. These entertainers are our new Christs and saints. Our media and culture are devoted to them. Would previous saintly figures need to perform such rituals to have the same reverence in our contemporary culture?
