Joseph Au

Badhu Totemal

My name is Joseph Au and I’m 35 years of age and an artist from Badu Island in the Torres Strait in the Far North Queensland, Australia. I’m the chairman of the newly formed “Badhulgaw Kuthinaw Mudh”. I entered my piece because I thought this year’s Compact Prints 2010 International Print Exhibition and Exchange is a good opportunity to promote myself as an up and coming artist. The print is called the Badhu Totemal (The Totems of Badu Island). We have three tribes and the totems identify the three different tribes: Dhangal (Dugong), the Thupmul (file ray stingray) and the Umay (dog). Dhangal totem – people are the badu tribe; Thupmul totem – people are the Argon tribe; Umay totem – people are the Wakaid tribe. My tribe is the Wakaid tribe the Umay totem people.
