A Door into Summer

This image is based on a holiday on NorthStradbrokeIsland in 2005 when it rained for a week. I had brought my digital camera and portable computer, and was teaching myself to use Corel Painter to manipulate images and a Wacom tablet. Except for a couple of brief periods, it rained all day, every day, so I started working on images from inside the holiday house and from the balcony of the house. The house had big wooden and glass doors that overlooked the ocean, and I would sit and draw and photograph the changes in the ocean and the house as it went from dull to more dull. Finally, when the clouds started to break up a bit, the light would illuminate the exterior balcony and leave the interior in shadow. The image is a combination of photographs taken at different times. I used Photoshop to correct and collage the images, and then used Painter to eliminate a lot of the interior details. I added the buff coloured shape on the upper left of the image to echo the shape of the exterior roof over the balcony. I was very interested in the combination of architectural shapes, and their solidity compared to the view of the ocean.
