Waiting for Shore Birds

Every year scores of waders or shore birds make the perilous journey from Eastern Siberia and Alaska, where they breed in the northern summer, to Australia and other southern hemisphere countries. They return year after year to the same favoured shorelines – the mangrove wetlands and estuaries as well as rocky outcrops. Recently, the number of birds making the journey has decreased dramatically, due to coastal development and the destruction of feeding grounds in Asia and Australia.
