Meriam Warrior

I live in Townsville, but am regionally from Murray Island, Torres Strait.

I chose to do this print, as back in ancient time, only the initiated people wore the Dari (Head dress). The Dari that is worn by the warrior represents the ancient gods Malo and Bomai.

The face of the Dari represents Malo, and the feathers on the sides are for Bomai, the Shark God. The black feather in the centre of the Dari represents the Magic of Saiid (the Culture Hero or Sex God).

The warrior that wears the Dari imparts the spirit of the two ancient gods, Malo and Bomai. The spirit of Malo protects and strengthens him, and the spirit of Bomai gives him the ferocity of a shark, to make him a very powerful Meriam Warrior of the Torres Straits.
