Join Umbrella from 10am Sunday 6 October for an In Conversation in conjunction with Rhonda Stevens' exhibition Regardé Aqua. Umbrella's Gallery Manager and Curator Daniel Qualischefski will discuss with artist Rhonda Stevens the contemplative installation, including Stevens' inspirations and connections to the elements featured. The duo will also explore Stevens' broader arts practice.
Regardé Aqua will be on display at Umbrella alongside skeletons by Judy Watson and the Print Commission 2024 presented by the Print Council of Australia from 13 September to 27 October 2024.
Rhonda Stevens is a contemporary artist living and working on Yunbenun (Magnetic Island). She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 1993, but has an arts practice spanning over 35 years. Stevens’ work is held in numerous collections, including the Victorian Teachers Union, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and national and international private collections. The artist was awarded the Pursuit of Excellence Award: Printmaking Award from the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE Townsville in 2010 and the Victorian Teachers Union, Acquisition Award (Association of Sculptors of Victoria Annual Exhibition) in 1988. She has exhibited widely internationally, with strong connections to Naarm (Melbourne), Gadigal Country (Sydney) and North Queensland. Stevens' work has maintained core conceptual elements over the years, despite developing across forms, materials and mediums. Her work consistently reflects an innate interest in the interconnectedness of humanity, coupled with a deep regard for the primary elements of “our fragile, complex universe”. Stevens’ work is imbued with an acceptance of that which is transient and imperfect, examining the precarious state of the world in constant flux. The artist enjoys exploring these concepts across multiple disciplines, realised through gestural assemblages.
Regardé Aqua is commissioned by Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts in partnership with the North Australian Festival of Arts.
